3. The Verbal

Grammatical elements that are formed with verbs but do not function as verbs are verbals. They are derived from verbs but function as other parts of speech (nouns, adjectives, or adverbs) in a sentence.

Element Explanation Example Why Not a Verb?
Infinitive The base form of a verb, usually preceded by "to," functioning as a noun, adjective, or adverb. To run is fun. (noun) Acts as a noun/adj/adv rather than showing action or state.
Gerund The -ing form of a verb functioning as a noun. Swimming is good exercise. Names an activity/idea rather than expressing action.
Participle A verb form (usually -ing or -ed) functioning as an adjective describing a noun/pronoun. The baking cake smells delicious. Modifies a noun or pronoun, conveying descriptive detail.
Infinitive Phrase An infinitive with its modifiers or complements, acting as a noun, adjective, or adverb. She went there to study. Modifies or acts as another part of speech, not expressing main action.
Gerund Phrase A gerund with its modifiers or complements, functioning as a noun. Running a marathon takes endurance. Takes the place of a subject or object in a sentence.
Participial Phrase A participle with its modifiers or complements, functioning as an adjective. The crying baby needs attention. Provides additional detail about a noun without expressing main action.
📌 Why Verbals Are Not Verbs:
  1. Infinitive: Though derived from a verb, it doesn't perform the action or state of being. In "To read is enjoyable," to read is the subject of the sentence.
  2. Gerund: It takes the place of a noun, treating an activity as a thing. In "Swimming is fun," swimming is the subject noun.
  3. Participle: It functions purely as an adjective. In "The broken vase lay on the floor," broken describes the noun vase.
